Update on Jeff Hoose

Well, he didn't send this in, but it was in the Northville Record, so I guess we can post it here. AND, they were kind enough to give us some free publicity about the reunion...

A TRUE AMERICAN HERO: Former Northville resident earns high military honors.

Former Northville resident CPT Jeffary M. Hoose is truly an American hero.

In a July 8 ceremony in the office of Congressman Fred Upton (R-MI) in Kalamazoo, Hoose received some high honors for his military service.

Upton welcomed four generations of Hoose's family to the ceremony. He presented Captain Hoose, a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, the Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman Badge and Bronze Star Medal "V" for exceptionally valorous conduct in the line of fire. Hoose, who comes from a family rich in military tradition, was joined by his grandfather, who was a WWII Naval aviator who fought in the Pacific Theater.

Hoose is a 1988 graduate of Northville High School and is married to the former Kristi Fortenberry of Northville, who graduated from NHS in 1989. He is the son of Greg and Merri Hoose of Northville and the son-in-law of Jerry and Sue Fortenberry of Northville.
He is currently an assistant professor of military science and the commander of the 1433rd Engineer Company (Sapper) in the Michigan Army National Guard at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.

Born in Big Rapids, he is a 1996 graduate of Indiana State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in computer science.

He is a former Special Forces enlisted soldier and was commissioned through Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Ga.

His previous assignments have included Civil Affairs Team Leader, 415th CA BN (Kosovo and Iraq deployments); Army Forces Executive Officer, SOTO CANO Air Base, Honduras; Combat Engineer Executive Officer, HSC/52 ECB(H); Equipment Platoon Leader, Special Forces Senior Engineer Sergeant, ODA 2081/B/3/20th SFG(A) (Iraq deployment); and Special Forces Junior Engineer Sergeant, ODA 1232/C/1/12th SFG(A). Hoose has deployed to both Kosovo and Iraq as a Civil Affairs Team Leader.

His military education includes Civil Affairs Officer Advance Course, Engineer Officer Basic Course, Special Forces Engineer Sergeant Course, Russian Language School, Airborne School and Air Assault School.

Awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (with V and two OLC), Purple Heart, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (four OLC), Army Achievement Medal (three OLC), Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Army Super Unit Award, National Defense Service Medal (with gold star), Kosovo Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon (with numeral 2), Army Service Ribbon, Coast Guard Special Operations Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Special Forces Tab, Combat Infantry Badge, Combat Action Badge, Expert Infantry Badge, Basic Parachute Badge, Air Assault Badge, Egyptian Parachute Badge and German Armed Forces Badge for Military Proficiency .

"We're very proud of him and his family," said Sue Fortenberry, who noted that Hoose will celebrate his 20-year high school reunion this weekend in Northville.
